Pall Mall is the first premium cigarette brand which was introduced to the tobacco market in 1899 by the Butler & Butler Company. The brand was named after Pall Mark, one of the prominent streets in London. Being the first premium brand, it was meant only for people of upper class. Some state that the name was derived from a game played in the seventeenth century. In the Pall Mall game, the player had to hit a wooden ball with the help of a mallet down to an adjoining alley while using as few strokes as he could.
Interestingly, Pall Mall witnessed change of ownership for many times. In 1907, the brand was purchased by American Tobacco. The new owner brought about slightly different design of cigarettes enlarging the size to 85mm and terming it as the king size. This innovation aimed at stuffing tobacco into the wrap of cigarettes in a new way to make them easier on smokers throats.
In 1940,Pall Mallhad been advertised under a grammatically incorrect but meaningful slogan stating that "travels the smoke further". This referred to the enlargement that occurred in its length. Other famous slogans of this brand in the following years were "outstanding" and "they are mild".
In 1960, Pall Malls achieved a distinction when it was ranked the number one brand of cigarettes in America. In the meanwhile, it further enlarged the size of cigarettes making them 100mm introducing "longs". Later on in 1966 Pall Mall was backed away mainly on account of highly successful, but ironically with incorrect grammar, campaign "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should."
The brand Pall Mallwas acquired in 1994 by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation which in turn was merged with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company on 30th July 2004. Ever since then Reynolds has been manufacturing both filtered and unfiltered Pall Mall cigarettes. Generally, Pall Mall packs come in three different colors: red, green and orange. This variety of color is the indicative of its different versions. The blue color is for Pall Mall Ultra Light version while the orange color refers to Pall Mall Light version. Moreover, from the color of their pack, one can identify from which market they have been purchased. However, its logo as well as the main signatory image has remained unchanged in order to retain brand consistency.
Currently Pall Mall is ranked fourteenth top brand in the United States. Earlier on in 2008, it was on the eighteenth position. It is assumed that Pall Malls striving hard with utmost vigor to gain better ranking in the tobacco market.
