Benson & Hedges (B & H) is a British cigarette brand well known for its royal association. It was originally manufactured in 1873 by Richard Benson and William Hedges for Albert Edward, the then Prince of Wales. This brand introduced a lighter tobacco which decreased the original harshness of tobacco that was hard to be inhaled, except in little quantities through pipes.
Available in several varieties in different markets across the world, the Gold and Silver forms of B & H, also known as Green and Black, have attained great approval of smokers. Of its various characteristics, the most significant one is the exquisite technique used by its manufacturers during the production of B & H cigarettes. Even in the basic ingredient of tobacco, there is no parallel of B & H, let alone other essential components of cigarettes.
Interestingly, one and a half century old cigarette brand has carved out several slang phrases used by laymen for Benson & Hedges cigarettes. Benson and Hedges has a proud nostalgic British heritage having roots in its time of conception. The journey started by Richard Benson and William Hedges was undertaken by Phillip Morris in 1928 and then in 1955 the Gallaher Group, a present day subsidiary of Japan Tobacco International, acquired the proprietary rights of this old brand. Currently, this brand is registered in Old Bond Street, London, and is produced by Gallaher Group in Lisnafillen, Ballymena, Northern Ireland for the UK and Irish markets.
In 2007, Benson & Hedges introduced a new packing design changing the old Benson and Hedges to the Gold, while using a slightly different formula that decreased the 0.1 mg of nicotine level on one hand and brought the price further down on the other. The company has also manufactured B & H in various sizes ranging from king size to 100 mm. Aside from these changes, Benson and Hedges began to sell cigarette packs containing only 14 cigarettes alongside its 10 & 20 packs. For the time being the rolling versions of Benson and Hedges include Benson & Hedges Smooth Lights Gold, and Benson & Hedges Special Filter.
